A brain aneurysm is a bulge or a weak spot in a blood vessel that can rupture and cause bleeding in the brain that can be life threatening. In most cases, a person does not even know he or she has a brain aneurysm, as they don’t cause any symptoms.

The main symptom of a ruptured brain aneurysm is a sudden and excruciating headache. Some people also experience nausea, vomiting, confusion, loss of consciousness, light sensitivity, stiff neck, blurred vision, and seizures. A ruptured aneurysm is extremely dangerous, so it is vital to receive medical care as quickly as possible after symptoms begin. Call 911 immediately.

Aneurysms can be treated by coiling (minimally invasive) or clipping (open surgery) the aneurysm.

During endovascular coiling a catheter is passed through the groin up into the artery containing the aneurysm, where platinum coils are released. The coils induce embolization of the aneurysm and seal off the opening of the aneurysm. Minimally invasive endovascular coiling is currently the preferred method of treatment.

A brain clipping procedure involves the surgeon removing a section of the skull, locating the aneurysm and placing a metal clip on the bulge that remains in place to prevent further enlargement and ruptures.

The decision regarding treatment is dependent on many factors, including the age and condition of the patient, the size and shape of the aneurysm, and the location of the aneurysm. The neurosurgeon will review all of the patient's records and films and decide on the appropriate procedure, specifically for each patient.
