The Tulane Stroke Program has been recognized by the American Heart Association as being on the Gold Plus Elite Honor Roll, which is its highest designation for excellence in stroke care. Tulane is one of only three Joint Commission Certified Comprehensive Stroke Centers in the state, and the only one in Orleans Parish. This highly regarded designation recognizes hospitals with the ultimate infrastructure, multidisciplinary staff and training standards to manage the most complex neuro-vascular cases. Tulane Neurosurgeons are dual fellowship trained in both open microsurgery and minimally invasive endovascular neurosurgery for treatment of vascular disorders of the brain and spine.
Our flagship hospital, East Jefferson General Hospital, has a dedicated neuro intensive care unit staffed 24/7/365 by board certified neurocritical care and stroke physicians with the knowledge and experience to treat the most complex and emergent neurological cases.
Tulane is the hub in a broad tele-health network that partners with numerous hospitals in Louisiana and Mississippi, providing emergent evaluations through robotic video conferencing at distant hospital emergency rooms. Time is of the essence in diagnosing and treating stroke; These services are critical to initiating therapy quickly. The goal of our program is to improve stroke care in the community and our program allows the majority of patients to receive expert diagnosis and treatment while remaining in their community. However, our program also facilitates immediate helicopter transfer of more acute patients requiring a higher level of care to our comprehensive stroke center when necessary.
Tulane's commitment to cutting edge research and world class stroke care was on full display at the first annual Tulane Neurovascular Symposium: Updates in Stroke Care.
