Biography

Dr. Dumont, Charles B. Wilson Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Tulane University School of Medicine, serves as the Director of Tulane’s Center for Clinical Neurosciences.

Dr. Dumont is a board-certified neurosurgeon who completed his residency at the University of Virginia as well as a fellowship in cerebrovascular, skull base and endovascular neurosurgery at the University of Virginia. He has interests in all areas of pediatric and adult neurosurgery including stroke and cerebrovascular disease, tumors of the brain and spine, spine disorders, epilepsy, peripheral nerve disease, minimally invasive stereotactic radiosurgery.

He is dually trained in open traditional microsurgery and minimally invasive endovascular surgery for vascular disorders of the brain and spine, and believes that Tulane’s commitment to having multiple certified and fellowship-trained surgeons is an important differentiator locally and regionally. He has active neurosurgical research interests and has published and presented extensively with more than 200 publications and more than 175 national and international presentations. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Neurosurgery (the specialty’s leading scientific journal) and serves on the Editorial Boards of several other academic journals.

Dr. Dumont’s particular expertise in stroke, aneurysm and hemorrhage has led to his being one of a select team of physicians with whom the FDA consults as they evaluate new technologies.

Biography

Dr. Maulucci is the Director of the Neurosurgery Spine Program at Tulane. Fellowship-trained in complex spine, Dr. Maulucci specializes in complex spine disorders and minimally invasive spine surgery. He completed his residency training program at the University of Maryland as well as a fellowship in complex spine surgery at Thomas Jefferson University.

Dr. Maulucci provides comprehensive care for spine patients. He is considered one of the leading experts in the country on surgical techniques using the Excelsius GPS spinal robot. He utilizes minimally invasive techniques, and possesses expertise in treating scoliosis, spinal deformity, and tumors of the vertebral column as well as complex revision surgery.

Dr. Maulucci has research interests in complex spine disorders and outcomes research.  He has published numerous articles in these areas, and presented at national and international conferences.

Dr. Nerva is a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon who serves as Tulane Co-Director of Cerebrovascular, Endovascular and Skull Base Surgery. He completed his neurosurgery residency at the University of Washington in Seattle. During residency, he completed a fellowship in cerebrovascular surgery at Macquarie Neurosurgery in Sydney, Australia and following residency, a second fellowship in endovascular neurosurgery at the University of Florida. He has research interests in vascular neurosurgery and the clinical outcomes of neurosurgical patients and is widely published in these fields.

Biography

Dr. John Freiberg is board certified in Neurology and Vascular Neurology, and serves as Stroke Director for Lakeview Regional Medical Center and Interim Chair of Neurology. Dr. Freiberg is also an Assistant Professor of Neurology.

Dr. Freiberg’s interests include stroke and hospital based neurology. Dr. Freiberg was in private practice for 13 years and served as Medical Director for West Jefferson Medical Center’s Stroke Unit from 2006 to 2012. He was also the Director of Tulane’s Neurology Residency Program, Director of Tulane’s Neurology Vascular Fellowship Program, and the Tulane Hospital Stroke Director.

Dr. Freiberg’s education includes an internship at Rhode Island Hospital /Brown University School of Medicine from 1991-1992, and a residency in Neurology at Tulane University School of Medicine from 1992-1995.

Dr. Justin Salerian

Biography

Dr. Justin Salerian is fellowship-trained in Vascular Neurology and is double Board Certified in both Neurology and Vascular Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.  He is the Director of Tulane’s Comprehensive Stroke Center.

Dr. Salerian completed his neurology residency training at Georgetown University in Washington, DC; in his final year he served as Chief Resident. He then completed his Vascular Neurology Fellowship at Tulane. He is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Tulane and is deeply committed to training medical students, residents, and fellows to become world class physicians.

His interests in Neurology are broad ranging including stroke, acute care neurology, neuro-immunology, neuro-behavioral disorders, post-concussion syndromes, and epilepsy.  He is trained in multiple neuro-diagnostic modalities including neurovascular ultrasound and EEG. He performs botulinum toxin (Botox) injections with EMG guidance to treat spasticity.  He serves as a physician in Tulane’s Professional Athlete Clinic, which is one of only four official National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) partnered sites around the country that has been entrusted to provide medical care for retired NFL players. Overall, his approach to medicine welcomes all patients, even those with the most challenging neurological disorders.  

As for his research interests, Dr. Salerian is currently a co-investigator on multiple clinical trials, including one testing a medical cooling suit that can induce rapid hypothermia (cooling) as a neuroprotection strategy in acute stroke. Notably, prior to medical school, Dr. Salerian was a paramedic and a film-maker. He spent a year in South Africa working as a medic, and then wrote and directed a critically acclaimed documentary inspired by this experience. The film is called Tell Me and I Will Forget; it has been on Netflix and film festivals around the world.

Biography

Dr. Thomas Francavilla is a board-certified neurosurgeon who completed neurosurgery training at The George Washington University, and completed a Fellowship studying brain tumors at the National Institutes of Health.  He has served as President of the Neurosurgical Society of Alabama, Southeast Regional Director of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the Southeast Quadrant Chairman of the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies.

Dr. Francavilla recognized minimally invasive spine surgery as a major advance for patients suffering from spinal related pain. He was an early adopter of this type of surgery, performing numerous minimally invasive procedures since 2002. He went on to complete a fellowship in this type of surgery with the Laser Spine Institute, performing over 2500 surgeries while on staff.

Dr. Francavilla sees patients in the Tulane Covington Neuroscience Clinic, and performs surgeries at Lakeview Regional Medical Center, a campus of Tulane Health System.

Biography

Dr. McAllister has a strong professional interest in complex spine surgery. Complex spine surgery includes ankylosing spondylitis, fractures, scoliosis and tumors. He also performs the more well recognized spine surgeries including Microdiscectomy and Microlaminectomy for a herniated disc, and minimally invasive surgeries. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and holds memberships in several professional societies, including the Congress of Neurosurgery, American Academy of Neurological Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, and the Joint Section of Spine and Peripheral Nerves. In addition to complex spine, Dr. McAllister performs brain surgery including head trauma and brain tumors.  He also performs surgery on the peripheral nervous system including carpal tunnel release and ulnar decompression and transpositions.

Dr. McAllister studied Zoology at the University of Georgia where he later received his doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine. He then went on to receive his medical doctorate in 1988 from the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. McAllister completed his internship in 1989 and his residency in Neurological Surgery in 1994 at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. Dr. McAllister subsequently completed a joint Orthopedic and Neurosurgery fellowship in spine at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. McAllister served as the Director of Spine Surgery at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.

Dr. Perez is a board-certified neurologist who specializes in movement disorders. Originally from southern Louisiana, Dr. Perez received an undergraduate degree in music performance at LSU in Baton Rouge followed by a medical degree from LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. She completed her neurology residency followed by fellowship training in Movement and Neurodegenerative Disorders at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

Her clinical expertise is in the diagnosis and treatment of tremor, Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, ataxia, and Huntington’s disease. She also has expertise in the placement and management of Deep Brain Stimulators for refractory tremor, Parkinson’s disease, and dystonia. She performs botulinum toxin (Botox) injections for chronic migraine and dystonia, and divides her professional time between clinical responsibilities at Tulane and the VA Medical Center, the education of the medical students and residents, and her deep commitment to her patients, which manifests itself in many ways, including regular interaction with patient support groups and musical performances with patients.

Dr. Aaron C. Sigler is a board eligible neurosurgeon who completed his residency training through the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and Hackensack University Medical Center, both in New Jersey, as well as a fellowship in Advanced Endoscopic and Open Skull Base Tumors at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. He specializes in tumors of the skull base through traditional open and advanced endoscopic approaches, tumors of the brain, simple spine surgery, and general neurosurgery.

As an osteopathic physician, Dr. Sigler’s approach to his patients is a more holistic one which views the patient as a person with a mind, body, and spirit rather than the sum of their medical problems. This philosophical approach prompts him to consider and attempt more conservative means before recommending surgery for his patients. When surgery is recommended, the most appropriate surgery is selected in a partnership with the patient and their family.

Dr. Sigler is a Tulane physician that sees patients at Baton Rouge General as part of a partnership with Tulane University, where he is an assistant professor of neurosurgery in the in the department of Neurosurgery.
